Elections
The July meeting featured elections for club officers. The candidates were:

President: Steve Camaron (incumbent)

Publicity Officer: Bob Stribula (incumbent)

Treasurer: Bob Hranek (incumbent)

Newsletter Editor: Dave Bohnenberger

Webmaster: Chris Moffa (incumbent), Tom Swider

All the unopposed candidates won their positions easily. The election for
Webmaster was hotly contested, with incumbent Chris Moffa retaining his
position in a close race.

Raffle Winners
There were some big winners as Rob Hooper won $48 in the June raffle and
Steve List won an incredible $50 in the July raffle.
The winner gets half the money collected for the raffle, with the other
half going into the club treasury. Tickets may be purchased from the club
treasurer when dues are collected or at any time before the drawing. Tickets
cost $2 for one, $4 for three, or $6 for five. A real bargain!

Club finances and attendance
The June meeting was attending by 40 paying members and 2 visitors. $180 in
dues were collected. In addition, the raffle added $42 dollars to the
treasury while a game sale brought in another $5. $16 in prepaid dues were
used, lowering the prepaid-dues balance to $528. Club expenses were $162 for
room rental and $31.27 for newsletter publication. The club cash balance was
up $33.73 to a total of $629.59.
The July meeting was attended by 39 paying members and one visitor. $170 in
dues were collected. In addition, the raffle added $44 to the treasury. $21
in prepaid dues were used, while $35 in prepaid dues were collected, raising
the prepaid-dues balance to $542. The only club expense was $162 for room
rental. The club cash balance was up $87 to $716.59.

Editorial

As editor, it is my prerogative to place my own "stamp" upon this venerable
publication. In this issue, at least, I have not really done so. I will let
you, loyal reader, help me decide what this newsletter should look like.
There are several possibilities that are not really being taken advantage
of:

· A classified ad section. Buy games, sell games, or trade with your fellow
club members. Also beg or offer rides to EPGS or other gaming events.
· A "Players Wanted" section. You will find a bit of this in this edition.
It's the perfect way to get together that big game you've been dreaming of.
· Game design news. We've got a bunch of designers in EPGS. Instead of
wandering around on game day trying to find test subjects, designers could
make their case here. I picture this as being somewhat different than a
"Players Wanted" section, as the designer should describe the game in depth
to spark interest.
· Reviews. I'm surprised we don't have more of these. I'm sure that among us
we purchase almost every game that gets released. I am also sure we have
representatives attend nearly every major game convention. Are they all too
good for words? I doubt it. Tell everyone else what you think!
· Regular columns. I think it might be interesting if someone wrote a series
of short articles on a particular subject, such as Axis and Allies
strategies.oh, right - we already have that. Still, there are many other
subjects that have not been touched on.

The possibilities are not exactly endless, but I don't think I have
exhausted them. If there is something you think should be included in this
newsletter, feel free to make suggestions. And remember: all contributions
are welcome!

Players Wanted

Russian Civil War

During the September meeting, I would like to organize a game of Russian
Civil War, starting at 1:00.  I expect to show up at around 11:30 to begin
setting it up.  If you would like to play but do not know the rules (or have
never played its cousin game Kingmaker), I'd recommend showing up at
by 12:30 so that I can review some of the game mechanics. Markers are
provided for up to 6 players thought more can play. This game emphasizes
negotiations and should take about five hours to complete.

Thanks,
Tom Swider

Fleets Under Sail

At the September 16 meet, Albert Parker will run another
demonstration/playtest game of "Fleets Under Sail," the board game he has
been developing to simulate the operations of, uh, fleets under sail.  This
is the the one where players are admirals, not captains, commanding up to
nine ships of the line whose captains can be depended upon to obey orders
(well, most of the time). Albert has put on two previous "Fleets Under Sail"
games at EPGS, at the regular October 1999 meet and at a special meet
in May 2000.  The May game incorporated lessons from October, and the
September 2000 game will benefit from the lessons of the May game as well as
the playtest/demonstration at the HMGS convention in July.  Previous EPGS
scenarios were the Glorious First of June, 1794 (October 1999) and the
Battle of the Chesapeake (May 2000).  Since the scenario will depend to some
extent on the number of players (the 1782 Battle of Cape Spartel requires a
dozen; "Collingwood's Victory," a Trafalgar alternative, requires eight), if
you plan to participate please notify Albert at acep@sprintmail.com, so that
he will know the range of scenarios to bring.  It will probably be possible
to accommodate additional players on the date of the meet.
